Shabbat Shalom
(16:21) Aharon 'confesses on it (the goat) all the iniquities of the children of Israel and all their rebellious sins among their sins' (to paraphrase the Artscroll translation where it suits).
The leader gets up there and starts the repentance process for the children of Israel. It is hard. First Aharon has to convince the people he has the right to confess for the nation. There is always a dissenter. In our case we have the Gabbai...The Gabbai's ego. He can't even read the Torah, but he is up there. No talent.
What are the sins?
You haven't cleaned for Pesach. I have seen your front lawn, it isn't even mowed, it is disgusting. Your house is filth...You never clean it, Frank.
Haven't greeted the stranger...Nobody cares about our new orphan in the community...Maybe the child is better off without the Farkowitz family as parents...
(16:24) And Aharon does atonement for him and the nation.
First a leader must atone for himself and then the nation
Like a Gabbai calling you up to read from the Torah...I have tried to atone on my behalf, but he cuts my misheberach's short.
Is the Gabbai the leader? Well- has he atoned on behalf of himself? I do not think so. He still can't read the Torah...I believe Dr. Goldsmith is yelling at the Gabbai when he is correcting. Atone for the fact you are Gabbai and reading transliteration...
It is hard for one to atone for their own sins. We can all yell at each other. What about our own iniquities?
Only one that can look into himself first, can be worthy of atoning on behalf of the nation. As a leader with very few sins, which I have atoned for...the worst...choosing this congregation as my pulpit...I must say that we have to work on the idea of keeping Mitzvot.
Paper seder plates is not our tradition. The Matzah factory is not a mitzvah. The mitzvah is staying away from Starbucks for a week...We must atone for the caffeine...Kimcha DPischa- atone for our lack of charitable giving and make sure that the poor have food for Pesach... The res of the year is not important. What is important is they do not starve on the holiday itself...many of the medications are not kosher for Passover...The people on Willowleaf St. live in a non-gated community. We must help them out...Make sure they too have food.
(16:19) And he purified and and made the altar holy
Rashi teaches that 'purified' is from the past, and 'sanctifying' it for the future.
And as we confess and make for a good Passover, may we all be Zoyche to a Passover table that without all of your sins. May even Frank merit to set a good example for his children and read the Haggadah in Hebrew this year- for the first time...It is pathetic hearing you read it in English...So that the next generation, the future, will not be a bunch of AmAratzim (ignoramuses)...May the Gabbai learn Hebrew for his past iniquities, so that in the future Dr. Goldsmith doesn't have to yell at everybody...May the new orphan have food this Pesach, so that our congregation of ingrates may finally be atoned for...So that you all can sip the lattechino and not have to feel guilty for not paying your dues.
